For many years of living outside the Philippines I’ve been asked the most common questions; where are you from and are you really a Filipino? While I do not deny my nationality but people are confused of my look, unless, if they hear my accent (excuse me I don’t have that strong Filipino accent, ha ha). Please allow me to share the different types of Filipino women and why foreigners should stop saying all Filipinos are the same. We are not the same! 😉
First of all, Filipino is not a race. Filipinos are categorized as Asians and our country, The Philippines is part of South-East Asia. Some describe us Pacific Islanders and it isn’t necessarily wrong either. In fact, for a long time, were known as Pacific Islanders. The ethnicity of Filipinos are mixed, local people classified as ‘blancos’ (whites) were the insulares or “Filipinos”, a person born in the Philippines of pure Spanish descent. We also have locals that look like European but are actually Filipinos. In certain part of the Philippines you will find mixed Austronesian ancestry. We have Austronesian roots, was developed in conjunction with Spanish, Chinese and American influences.
In our beautiful country we have 7,107 islands and each island or province has different types of beauty, attitude, culture and yes, even dialects. Our main language is Tagalog (a mixed of Bahasa Malay and Spanish) this is also why many Filipinos can understand Malay but in general, most Filipinos speak fluent English with ‘American’ accent. However, before the Americans came to our land the Spanish colonized the country for 333 years where they made strong roman-catholic influenced. It was only from 1898 to 1946 when America rule in the Philippines and began with the outbreak of the Spanish-American war in April 1898.
You can imagine we have many Spaniards and Americans living in our country. It feels like home away from home because they can somehow relate to our culture, food, history, political drama and yes, also attitude.
The beauty of Filipino women do not just lie on the physical looks but the character, and our roles and responsibilities. We carry the world on our shoulders. We make responsible decisions for the family and often the breadwinner. We are mostly outspoken, unafraid of catfight, talented, and yes sometimes even [unnecessarily] extravagant that can be misunderstand as ‘boastful’ or show off. When we speak people may think we are being sarcastic or mad but actually we are just explaining something in our Filipino-Spanish accent. However, on the soft side we are taught to treat our husband well, the importance of being a good wife and mother, and how to take care of the family. So, if you find a materialistic, cheater or player Filipino woman, you find the wrong one! So, keep looking. 😉
There are many crazy Filipino women and they can be violent with mental problems (I’m not kidding). Some Filipino women I met are simply just crazy; they run away from their spouse, they make multiple babies from different baby daddies for money and are gold diggers. Filipino women who are materialistic, cheater, crazy or player are mostly uneducated and do not have good childhood because of their irresponsible parents. Some Filipino fathers are known for having 2-3 more [secret] wives and have illegitimate children than can cause drama and depression to the first family. This is the reason why many Filipino women have trust issues to men and do not have healthy emotions. This is also the reason why many Filipino women are single mothers.
On the good note, most Filipino women are hard working. We can handle multiple jobs, we are clean in our home, we can be a good cook and we can be rich in our twenties because our common ultimate goal is to provide a good life for the family. So, when we find love, a man does not need to be rich but should be someone who has good morals and values. A good relationship is just icing on the cake.
The Physical Beauty Of Filipino Women
Unknown to many people that Filipino women look can be really confusing because most of us are mixed up! Ha ha. If you visit some provinces in the south of the Philippines, you will find locals who have similar look and accent to Malaysians. Some of them are also muslims. In the north or central (or capital), you will find locals who have fair skin, big almond brown eyes, sharp nose and jawlines, and are generally with European and Asian heritage. That’s why most Filipino women have an hourly glass shape body, booty of Latina and sharp features.
Not many Filipino women are tall and on average our height is from 5’0 to 5’6 foot tall.
However, most mixed kids (Filipino mixed Caucasian) can possibly have blue eyes or hazel brown eyes and are usually have sharp features. It is rare for mixed children (Caucasian and other Asian races) that can have blue or hazel brown eyes because it is only those babies who have [some] European ancestry from both parents can have light-coloured eyes before the age of one. And then they change eventually. For example, when my son was born he had grayish and light brown eyes but it changed to light brown before he turned one year old. Our genetics is complex.
The attitude of Filipino women
Not many Filipino women are shy, unless, a hard-core religious mother raised her and their family practice the strict roman-catholic principles. Most Filipino women are not afraid to speak up, especially when it comes to our rights in our relationship and society. We have the courage to fight, defend and argue. And it can be tiring to argue with a Filipino woman because if you end up with a crazy one, the drama will be dragged for years. We can forget what you told us many years ago but we may not forget how you make us feel. To have a relationship with a Filipino woman is challenging because most of us are sensitive at heart and argumentative.
The pressure and positivity delusion of Filipino women
The life pressure of many Filipino women is high as most of us are breadwinner. We make sacrifices to provide a better life for our family and often get hurt from a cheating partner or spouse. In our mind, we are keeping everyone in the family high spirits by accentuating the positive and addressing all the issues. But we knew that reality is more nuances than we are defining the problems.
We are known for being graceful to handle tough situations whether in a relationship or at work. We would be best able to handle bad news. To build a healthy relationship with a Filipino woman it is important for us to have good communication as we do not give our trust easily and completely, we require actions whatsoever. Because if we don’t trust you or feel comfortable being with you, then no amount of talking, explaining or reasoning will have any effect on us.
How to be friends with Filipino women?
Filipinos are known for being hospitable and caring. We open our family and home to everyone; however, we are careful and selective of our inner circle. To make it easy for you to be friends with Filipino women here are four survival tips:
- Don’t be a witch: Filipino women are confrontational and so, we dislike people who whisper in front of us that as if we can’t hear them. Can you imagine a situation when you are chatting with someone and she does awkward whispering that as if you can’t hear her? We appreciate people who are outspoken but respectful. Tell us if you don’t like something and we won’t push things hard. We will either avoid you or stop being friends with you.
- Mind your own business: Filipino women are naturally loving and caring, especially to our family and inner circle. We will do everything for love. However, the moment you cross the line, insult a family member, or disrespect the person we love be prepare for a massive catfight. The key to build healthy relationship with a Filipino woman is to mind your own business. 😉 Most Filipino women are territorial. We mind our own turf.
- Don’t be against us. We don’t back out: Filipino women are fundamentally rebellious. You will not have a peaceful life if you cheat, hurt or mean to us because we are confrontational, we back fight, we are argumentative and we do not know the word ‘peace’. A simple catfight will not be addressed in a principal’s office, it will be dragged to the Supreme Court. The social pressure is also high for our partner because if we are hurt or cheated, we tell fifty of our closest friends that our partner is the stupid person on earth. And we can justify our claims with true stories.
- Use decisive language: Filipino women are soft on the outside but tough on the inside. If you are in a relationship with a Filipino woman, do not leave the discussion open-ended. This is not a performance review; it’s a breaking up. Use words and phrases like “I have decided” rather than “I think”, or “I’ve heard from friends it is best for us…” We do not appreciate people who are so blah blah but we appreciate healthy breakups.
Another tip: involving another person in your argument will not be a wise decision because Filipino women can turn from a sweet girlfriend to a crazy detective. We will search for the people behind the decision of breakup, we will confront the people you mention in the breakup and worst you will not have a peaceful life. To avoid this drama, use decisive language with respect when you break up with a Filipina girlfriend. Break up gently with truthful confession rather than walking away from a relationship.
Our attitude can be a deep personality trait but sometimes our attitude can actually make us better directors, lawyers, and CEOs than employees. The key to be friends with Filipinos is not complicated. You just need to be nice and respectful. 😉
